What the f*ck is your deal?!
As GUTPUNKS, my work exists as expressions of visceral emotion and feelings too heavy to express in words. It is as a reclaimation of myself through stories about queer, angry Asian women who are flawed and morally gray, with Western alternative subcultures and punk ideology interlaced into their cores.
I'm influenced by my irrevocably Cantonese American experience—a paradox in which American society isolates me as a perpetual foreigner yet fetishizes my culture, while my family’s struggle to assimilate leads to a neglect of my heritage and a misunderstanding of how American ways are also part of me. My art attempts to reconcile with all of this. It's rough out here, y'all.
Professionally, I am pursuing a career in visual development for animation, particularly environment design. City scenes, architecture, and cluttered settings with lots of room for hidden easter eggs are my specialty. My professional goals exist to serve as a supplement to my identity and interests--not the other way around. I want my work to contribute to not only respectful and fulfilling representation, but a cathartic one too.
Japanese anime, American cartoons, and western indie comics are the driving forces that have pushed me to become a better storyteller. While I am typically a digital artist, I also enjoy experimenting with ways to upcycle old material through screenprint, collage, and fashion.
